Bilberry became popular during World War II when U.S. and British pilot discovered their night vision improved after including bilberries in their diets. Bilberries are high in flavonoids called anthocyanosides. These increase enzymes and substances in the eye that are important for good vision and eye function.
They appaer to work particularly well in the retina and have been used in treating retinopathy. Bilberry is also commonly used to support glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.
Grape Seed Extract, Quercetin, NAC Help Protect the Eyes
Grape seed extract is a great source for powerful antioxidants known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC's). OPC's are highly effective antioxidants that scavenge free oxygen radicals more effectively than Vitamins C and E. Studies have shown OPC's to be effective in limiting cataract progression and in treating/preventing glaucoma and other types of retinal disease.
Quercrtin is also a flavonoid with antioxidant properties. Its ability to scavenge free radicals contributes to the prevention and treatment of several eye disorders.
N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is a form of the amino acid cysteine. NAC helps break down mucus and detoxify the body. Early studies indicate NAC may help prevent development of cataracts and macular degeneration.
